Remove “Powered by WordPress” Footer Links to make your site professional
You may have wished to make WordPress more personal and unique but because of the presence of certain links or icons, you may not have been able to do so. One link that many WordPress users wish to remove from their site is the footer link that says ‘powered by WordPress’. When you are having your own blog or a website (especially a business corporate website) on WordPress, you would want it to be just yours and remove anything that lends the credit of your website to anybody else.
The footer links can be removed as WordPress does not impose the obligation of using the link on its users. Since WordPress is a free site, it allows its users to use the site as they wish to and allows users to even modify its source codes. That is the advantage of the GPL license. The same way, you can use the wordpress themes, plugins, etc and customize them as per your needs
Methods to remove “Powered by WordPress” Footer Links
You will find numerous ways with which you can remove the footnote links but there are two ways that are easier and fast.
Theme settings method:
Most professional developers who create or build a wordpress theme understand the importance of having an option to remove footer links. For these WordPress themes, all you have to do is go to the theme customizer of WordPress.
Go to ‘Appearance’ and then go to ‘Customize’.
Some themes may also have an option to remove the footer links either using Theme Options or Widgets Section
Footer.php Code method:
Using the php code method is not difficult. It is quite easy in fact. First, go to the footer.php code area and edit it. Here is how it is done. First, look for this file ‘content/themes/yourtheme/footer.php’.
Once you get this file, simply open in the text editor and search for ‘powered by’. You will then know what part needs to be removed from the code to enable the deletion of powered link.
If you skim through the twenty sixteen theme which is the default theme, the codes would look something like
* Fires before the twentysixteen footer text for footer customization.
* @since Twenty Sixteen 1.0
do_action( 'twentysixteen_credits' );
<span class="site-title"><a href="<?php echo esc_url( home_url( '/' ) ); ?>" rel="home"><?php bloginfo( 'name' ); ?></a></span>
<a href="<?php echo esc_url( __( 'https://wordpress.org/', 'twentysixteen' ) ); ?>"><?php printf( __( 'Proudly powered by %s', 'twentysixteen' ), 'WordPress' ); ?></a>
</div><!-- .site-info -->
You may remove the entire section or may customize the same based on your requirements
